Needing to replace an instrument bulb, I decide to replace them all with red LEDs.
After getting tired of not being able to see my speedometer at night, I decide to replace the light bulbs with red colored LED's. This should give my instrument panel a nice red glow at night, reminiscent of my BMW 325Ci's instrument panel.
I order the LEDs from SuperBright LEDs. I order eight, but only needed five. Guess I was thinking I should have a few spares laying around.
Here's what the LED lights look like. They are a direct replacement for the stock incandescent bulbs.
The first step to the project is to "skin" the bike. I need to remove hand guards, nose piece, and windscreen. To remove the instrument cowl, the windscreen support covers must be removed.
Then four torx screws can be removed that hold the instrument cowl in place.
Before you can remove the cowl, the windscreen brackets must be rotated out of the way.
This is accomplished by loosening the phillips head screws that secure the brackets...
... then rotating the brackets 90 degrees.
With the brackets rotated out of the way the cowl can be removed.
Two bolts that secure the instrument panel to the frame are now accessible. There are two, one on each side.
A small clip holds the top of the panel in place. This is easily pushed off the stud, enabling the panel to be removed.
