Another Joshua Tree forest appears on the high desert.

The road west out of Death Valley is an excellent ride for the motorcycle, giving me another opportunity to even the tire wear from the middle to the sides.

Leaving Death Valley, the BMW is in its element: a multi-hundred mile ride through several mountain ranges, interspersed with autobahn like straights, and incredible views.

Death Valley has these huge alluvial fans, places where water erodes material from the mountains, and deposits them in fan-shaped layers on the valley floor.

Sunday morning dawns bright and clear. I pack up and hit the road by 9:15am. Again with the to-the-horizon views, no cars, and no place to hide.

... a very desolate place. I get back to camp, make dinner and go to bed early. I sleep better tonight, although the wind does pick up.

The most intersting part of Scotty's Castle was the lush landscape. It's a shock to see such greenery after viewing nothing but hundreds of miles of dry rocks and desert landscape.

So off I go to "Scotty's Castle." It is a mansion built in the 1930's for a millionaire recluse and his companion. The mansion is interesting, but was never completed.
