As I'm cruising along, I look down and notice the fuel light is on. Ruh-roh. I've got a bit of a dilemma. The next gas stop is Caliente, which is about 52 more miles. About 12 miles off my route from here is the town of Alamo, which *might* have gas, but I'm not sure. The map on the Garmin is over two years old, so I don't know if I trust it. If I go to Alamo, and there isn't any gas, I'm screwed, as the extra 20 miles that entails will definitely put me out of range.
I've gotten 220 miles out of a tank full of gas before, and can usally make 200 without too much fuss. It should be possible to make it to Caliente, but it's going to be close. I opt to head for Caliente, reasoning that if I do run out of gas, I'll be a couple miles shy, not 20 miles or more.
